Warning: Contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 3.

At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 3, a brief post-credits scene shows Ben but it raises more questions than it answers. 3 seasons in, The Umbrella Academy has set itself a precedent of leaving each season on a huge cliffhanger. This previously saw the siblings finding themselves in a new time period or timeline, and The Umbrella Academy season 3 ending is no different.

After finding the machine in the Hotel Oblivion, the remaining siblings found themselves being used as an energy source for that machine. Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) had clearly always planned to use the seven super-powered humans in either timeline to power this machine and remake the universe such that Abigail was alive. However, Allison rejecting Hargreeves' plan and double-crossing them leaves the siblings alive, if powerless, in the new timeline.

The final moments of The Umbrella Academy season 3 show that in the new reality Reginald Hargreeves is at the head of a huge business empire. The siblings are left to explore this new world in their own ways, which leaves Luther heading off in search of Sloane. It’s not clear whether Sloane or other versions of the Umbrellas and Sparrows exist in this reality, but The Umbrella Academy season 3 end credits scene might give clues to that.

What Happens In Umbrella Academy Season 3's End Credits Scene?

In the opening of The Umbrella Academy season 1, a scene set on October 1, 1989, shows a Russian woman flirting with a boy. When she jumps into a pool and spontaneously gives birth to a child likely grew up to be Viktor Hargreeves (Elliot Page). Throughout the scene, The Umbrella Academy's narrator, Pogo, explains that 43 babies were born this way on that day. In The Umbrella Academy season 3, that woman met a more gruesome end because of Harlan in the new timeline and the opening scene is instead set on a train in Seoul on that same day. Notably, only 16 children were born in this timeline.

In The Umbrella Academy season 3 end credits scene, a person who looks like Ben (Justin H. Min) is seen riding what appears to be the same train from the opening scene. This Ben is reading a book in Korean and wears glasses but is still portrayed by the same actor. No other words are stated during this scene, but it heavily implies that, just as The Umbrella Academy season 1 intro was likely the birth of Viktor, the season 3 intro was Ben’s birth.

Which Ben Is On The Train In The Season 3 Post-Credits?

By the time of The Umbrella Academy season 3’s post-credits scene, the audience is already well acquainted with two Bens. The original Umbrella Ben died when he was young as part of “the Jennifer Incident” before proceeding to haunt Klaus (Robert Sheehan) until his spirit moved on at the end of season 2. The Umbrella Academy season 3 introduced Sparrow Ben who grew up in a separate timeline and, while serving as his team’s Number Two, has developed a more abrasive personality.

While it is conceivable that the Ben in The Umbrella Academy season 3 post-credits scene is Sparrow Ben, it is unlikely as he seems a much calmer person and at the end of Sparrow Ben’s previous scene, he had shown no intention of heading to Seoul in South Korea. This Ben is also not the original Umbrella Ben as this is an entirely new timeline and, with no Umbrella Academy, this version would not have grown up with the other team members. The Ben in The Umbrella Academy season 3 end credits scene is rather an entirely new iteration of the character who likely grew up without powers and might well not even be called Ben.

What Does The Season 3 Post-Credits Scene Mean For The Umbrella Academy?

Introducing a third iteration of Ben for The Umbrella Academy season 4 might seem like a strange choice, but it opens up a lot of possibilities for the future of the show’s storytelling. In season 3, audiences have seen how the family are excited to welcome in someone who can fill the hole left by Ben’s death. That narrative would take a fairly logical and potentially problematic route if the family slowly molded the Sparrow Ben to be more like their dead sibling, or if they failed to accept that he was a different person.

As The Umbrella Academy has introduced a new Ben, there is space for the two Bens to face off against each other. This could be an interesting prospect for the show and the possible infighting whether they get their powers back, never get their powers again, or only one of them gets powers. It also opens the door for infighting between the two Bens over being accepted or not accepted by the family. Most importantly, the sight of a third Ben in The Umbrella Academy suggests that there might be new versions of all of the characters in this reality that have grown up without powers and it is possible that because of the way the reality was created they would not be subject to Paradox Psychosis

Why It's Good That The Post-Credits Is A New Ben

Although some viewers might be eager for the original Umbrella Ben to return in some form, it is actually a good thing that this is a whole new Ben being added to The Umbrella Academy season 4. This new calmer Ben can offer a nicer relationship dynamic than the Sparrow Ben provides. While bringing back the original Ben might have seemed like a way to do this, doing so would have undercut the importance of the original Ben’s The Umbrella Academy season 2 arc and his moving on. While this might create a mess of Ben’s going forward, it’s the best choice for the future of the show.
