Mary Marvel has gone through her fair share of costumes over the years, but as DC Comics' newest Shazam, none have been quite as stylish or packed with Easter eggs as the one she is sporting in the new variant cover by Dan Hipp. The artwork will appear on select issues of The New Champion of Shazam! #2, which will be out in September. The series, by Josie Campbell and Evan "Doc" Shaner, will follow the adventures of Mary as she takes on the Shazam mantel for herself. While the main cover for issue #2 shows her fiercely protecting her friends and family, this variant is a bit more cartoonish and shows the heroine in a fun and lighthearted way.

Dan Hipp is a cartoonist best known for their work on Teen Titans GO! They have also done a variety of cover art for comics, including designing Batman’s most ridiculous outfit. Hipp has contributed their whimsical style to characters like Moon Knight and the Joker. Their stylized covers are often packed with Easter eggs designed to delight readers and highlight aspects of the character.

Their most current variant work for The New Champion of Shazam! was shared via Hipp’s Twitter account, and it does not disappoint. Mary finds herself clad in a comfortable looking sweater emblazoned with the familiar lightning bolt logo. Additional patterns on the sweater show the Billy Batson version of Shazam, Mister Mind, and the Seven Deadly Sins. She flexes with one arm while holding a talking rabbit under the other. DC heroes and villains look on, all of which are drawn in a style reminiscent of Teen Titans GO!. This gorgeous art shows off how confident and motivated the new Shazam truly is, and is a great follow up to the gorgeous portrait work by Joshua Middleton for issue #1.

The New Champion of Shazam! follows Mary's journey of personal discovery after the sacrifice of Billy Batson. Her powers gone, she finds herself living a civilian life for the first time in a while. But as she prepares to head off to her dream college she is interrupted by a talking rabbit who claims that Mary is the next Shazam. This is the heroine’s first solo miniseries and with an amazing creative team, along with Hipp’s quirky variant cover, it is sure to be a memorable one.

The look and feel of this new cover feels right for Mary. It gives her version of Shazam an innocent but powerful look that is stuffed with enough Easter eggs for any DC Comics fan. Though not a traditional superhero costume, Dan Hipp’s design still manages to be the right amount of fun and cool, just like Mary herself.
